Comparison with Traditional Techniques

Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) has emerged as an alternative approach for the excision of benign and malignant lesions in the rectum. This chapter will compare TEM with traditional techniques utilized for local excision. An overview of techniques available, including conventional traditional transanal excision (TAE) as well as extraluminal excisional techniques, will be given. These will be compared with the technical approaches used in TEM as well as differences in locations of lesions that are most amenable to these approaches. Data regarding outcome following TAE and TEM for both benign and malignant lesions will be reviewed. Consideration will also be given to potential reasons for differences in outcomes with these two techniques.

Overview of TAE
