Abstract

Several key issues for SETI must be addressed before we can conduct an efficient search. These include the number of potential star systems as a function of distance, the sender’s choice of broadcast versus targeted signaling, the possibility of sensor probes, and whether we ourselves should be sending signals — the significance of the latter issue being that an alien civilization might be reluctant to reveal its existence to us.
