The characteristics of data streams and the emerging requirements of streambased applications (as elaborated in Sections 2.1 and 2.2) pose many challenges [82], ranging from theoretical study of data stream algorithms to specification, computation, and expressiveness of continuous query languages to QoS-related issues of a DSMS. The literature review in Chapter 4 summarizes the large body of work that exists in the areas of stream and complex event processing. In this chapter, however, we limit our focus to a few QoS-related problems of stream processing including the relevance of complex event processing for stream-based applications.
