Abstract

With the development of new genetic technologies that can change or move genes (DNA) within or between species, the ability to alter traits in any organism is now possible. With respect to crops and livestock, traditional breeding techniques have been used to achieve desired traits with respect to size, taste, and appearance. However, this approach can take many years and undesirable traits can develop along the way. In contrast, genetic modification can be performed very rapidly to change a single trait. These new technologies, however, raise several concerns that the public and governments continue to debate that have slowed the use and acceptance of genetically modified (GM) foods in some regions.
