Abstract
Shortly after the seminal paper of Aserinsky and Kleitman (1953) in which they reported the existence of the rapid eye movements sleep stage, the French school lead by Jouvet called this sleep stage as Sommeil Paradoxale, i.e., paradoxical sleep, mainly because some of its features were difficult to explain at that time (Jouvet and Michel 1960a, 1960b). After almost 50 years of intensive experimental analysis concerning this stage, the full understanding of the biological role of REM sleep remains elusive.
