Abstract
A 39-year-old man is in his seventh day in the intensive care unit on ventilatory support (transoral-translaryngeal endotracheal intubation) after having acute care surgery for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Although the patient has brain stem function and is hemodynamically stable, he is unresponsive to voice.The current ventilator settings are as follows:
