Intuitively, a manifold is a generalization of curves and surfaces to arbitrary dimension. While there are many different kinds of manifolds—topological manifolds, Ck-manifolds, analytic manifolds, and complex manifolds, in this book we are concerned mainly with smooth manifolds.
