Abstract
Sustainable development and the emerging information society are two major visions that characterize the beginning of the 21st century. This article discusses the interrelation between the emerging information society and the goal of sustainability. How can information technology contribute to sustainable development? What are the opportunities and risks of the information society with regard to the goal of sustainability?
This work is part of the research programme “Sustainability in the Information Society (SIS)”, which is managed by the author and funded by the Council of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology.
