Abstract
There are obstacles related to our history of separating behavioral and physical health treatment that can only be overcome through day-today delivery of integrated services. To succeed in starting a truly integrated service, new BHCs need clear guidance to avoid old pitfalls and to change how PCPs perceive their services. This chapter offers a step-by-step approach to starting up a new service, along with specific strategies for influencing provider behavior. It also gives the new BHC suggestions for responding to administrator and staff requests for various types of help. Finally, an approach and specific tools for monitoring and overcoming obstacles to PCP referrals is detailed.
