Acute Leukemia

  • Chapter
Pediatric Oncology

Abstract

Leukemia is the most common malignancy in childhood. There have been major advances in our understanding of the biology of leukemia. Better supportive care and increased treatment intensity have led to significant improvements in the outcome of children with acute lymphoblastic and myelogeneous leukemias. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is used as treatment for patients in whom conventional-dose chemotherapy fails to induce a response. It is also used for patients in whom high-risk features are noted during first complete remission.
