Abstract
We are interested in discrete energy models only. The methodology was given in Chapter 7. We must now go into more depth to obtain a method that is practical for use in real applications. In this chapter, we introduce model-building using a concrete example that will illustrate the methodology. This example is relevant to both Part I and Part II. It involves a representation using discretized regular curves, but in a more complicated situation than the classic case of smoothing with nonparametric spline functions. The purpose is to estimate a family of regular curves of unknown number and length that will link sparse variably shaped “spots” distributed in a sequence of images.
There is a goal, but no path; that which we call a path is hesitation.
