Abstract
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) was originally discovered based on its ability to synergize with luteinizing hormone (LH) in the stimulation of ovarian follicle development. FSH is a globular glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 28, 000–30, 000. It consists of a common α and specific β subunits that form a dimer without covalent linkage. In both subunits, there are two asparagine-linked glycosylation sites, which allow the attachment of oligosaccharide side chains. After secretion by the anterior pituitary cells, FSH acts exclusively on granulosa cells in the ovary and Sertoli cells in the testis by binding to specific FSH receptors found in these cells.
