Chancroid is caused by Haemophilus ducreyi, a gram-negative bacterium. Chancroid, a genital ulcerative sexually transmitted disease, is characterized by painful genital ulcers and inguinal lymphadenitis. Like other genital ulcerative diseases (GUD), chancroid facilitates the transmission and acquisition of human immune deficiency virus (HIV).(26) The concern over the synergy between HIV infection and chancroid has renewed the interest to understand the pathogenesis of the disease and to develop new diagnosticmethods.
