Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of disorders that are typi cally first diagnosed in childhood. These disorders are characterized by a triad of impairments that often require specialized intervention and treat ment throughout childhood and oftentimes into adulthood. In addition to the three major impairments of ASD (i.e., socialization, communication, and restricted interests and repetitive behaviors), co-occurring behavioral chal lenges and psychopathology are also evident and even occur at higher rates than in the general population (Gillberg & Billstedt, 2000). The aim of this chapter is to review the assessment of ASD and comorbid psychopathology.
