Abstract

What constitutes a major event? Chart 7.1 illustrates the recessions in the UK since 1968. The graph with the dots shows the coincidental indicators of the economy. The one without dots shows unfilled job vacancies. Four recessions are illustrated:

  1. (i)

1970–1, starting when Roy Jenkins was Chancellor of the Exchequer,

  2. (ii)

1974–5 when Denis Healey was Chancellor,

  3. (iii)

1979–81 when Geoffrey Howe was Chancellor, and

  4. (iv)

1990–2 when Norman Lamont was Chancellor.
