The State-based Approach

  • David Fontana

The state-based approach to personality differs from the trait-based approach discussed in the last chapter in that it sees personality as being far more fluctuating and context-dependent. This accords well with the humanistic approach discussed in Chapter 4, since humanistic psychologists also see personality as continually changing and developing, but even here there is something of a variation in that state-based theories do not place so much emphasis on models of personality. Instead, they explore men and women as they are from moment to moment, using for the purpose measuring devices that are claimed to be as precise in their own way as those used by trait theorists.
