Abstract

This chapter discusses the findings and implications of a small undergraduate study designed to investigate the perceived usefulness of an information leaflet entitled ‘Preparing your child for hospital: a parents’ guide’. The study was carried out in a combined child and adult ear, nose and throat (ENT) unit to which children are admitted for elective surgery. A leaflet was developed and appropriately field-tested before being mailed to a group of parents for evaluation. Data were subsequently collected, an analysis of which demonstrated considerable parental satisfaction with the information contained in the leaflet. The results of this small study indicate that a well-designed information leaflet showing the importance of pre-admission preparation for children will assist and encourage parents to prepare their child for hospitalisation.
