Cytology of Infection and Host Resistance in Rice Blast Disease

Rice Blast: Interaction with Rice and Control

Abstract

Rice blast disease caused by Pyricularia oryzae Cav. (telemorph: Magnaporthe grisea (Hebert) Barr) is the most widespread and damaging disease of cultivated rice in both tropical and temperate zones. Studies have been made to forecast the occurrence of the disease, breed blast resistant lines, and control the disease by chemicals. The mechanisms underlying pathogenesis and host response must be elucidated for future progress in both applied and basic aspects of rice blast pathology. This chapter reviews the cytology of this disease, including fungal infection structure, change in host ultrastructure induced by infection, and the nature of the fungus-plant interfaces.
