Abstract

Discussing the issue of risk factors and resilience in the Latino population is a monumental task because we are not dealing with a monolithic population with the same experience but rather with individuals who, although may have a great deal of communality, also have a great deal of diversity in their experiences (Javier & Yussef, 1995). Understanding what factors are involved in making possible for an individual to excel even in the face of challenges and for another to flounder in the face of stress has been of great interest to behavioral scientists (Eccles et al., 1993; Garbarino, 2001; Jessor, 1993; Masten, Best & Garmezy, 1990; Quadrel, Fischoff & Davis, 1993). With regard to understanding of resilience and vulnerability in Latino individuals, different considerations need to be made depending upon whether we look at the Latino individuals in their country of origin or in the context of their immigration experience.
