Abstract

The school shootings of the 1990s hit home for parents and adolescents across the United States. For decades, many Americans perceived that violence only occurred in inner-city neighborhoods; however, this wave of school shootings sent the message that violence could happen anywhere, even in “good schools.” Other forms of violence against children, such as inner-city youth gang violence, also raised the public’s concern and prompted several new programs and policies to protect our most vulnerable children. Fortunately, the rate of innercity youth violence has been declining since its peak in the early 1990s. However, the problem of violence against children still exists, and is not experienced by Americans alone.
