Abstract
Solution-phase approaches in combinatorial chemistry have received significantly less publicity to date than have solid-phase approaches, as evidenced by the relatively small amount of published literature. This is, however, not a fair indication of the amount of effort being applied to solution-phase work, primarily in the major pharmaceutical companies but also in some specialist organisations. Many of these groups are beginning to present material at conferences that has yet to appear in the primary literature. This review will deal comprehensively, but exclusively, with published material to date in this field. Some indication of work in progress that has yet to be published was included in a recent review [l]. The areas covered in this chapter are divided into the following sections: solution-phase synthesis of pools of compounds; solution-phase synthesis of discrete compounds; liquid-phase synthesis; use of supported reagents.
