Abstract
Distance and open learning courses will differ in the ways in which the learning process takes place. They range from almost entirely web-based learning, with only occasional one-to-one tutoring, to hard copy learning where student packs are sent by post and backed up by regular tutorials. Even within these variables, no two courses will be identical in their delivery, even if they are both using essentially the same course components. No one method is better than any other, although some subjects lend themselves naturally to the use of one type of course delivery rather than another. What is important is that you feel confidence in the course components you are making use of, they suit your learning style and are appropriate for the training being delivered. Most courses will combine several of the course components discussed here in order to maximise the potential of each. You may not be sure which learning style suits you best, but by working through the options as they are described below you will be able to gain a good idea of how you might be working within each component, always remembering that we can adapt our natural learning styles to suit new demands placed upon us.
