Knowing or Being. The film-philosophies we have looked at so far have aligned themselves with one or the other. Is this division of approach ineluctable? According to Ian Jarvie, of course, the one logically follows from the other, but can their interdependence be recovered in any more material fashion, in a manner going beyond purely logical entailment? The work done by Edward Branigan and Joseph Anderson, that we turn to now, may provide just such a solution, for they do their best to take epistemology out of the mind and place it back in the world. And yet they both work within an analytical and cognitivist paradigm that would, prima facie, retain a bias towards the subject. Whether their pursuit is fruitful, therefore, is still to be seen.
