Sympathy, the phenomenon of being moved by the suffering of another, is I claim an essential element of the moral life. But attempts to explain why the suffering of another should move us often distort the very phenomenon they attempt to explain. This distortion, I argue in this chapter, flows froma failure to see our sympathetic responses to others as explanatorily basic in our conception of human nature. Consider an example.
