In chapter 2, the focus was on the question “Why study the Holocaust?” With the epigraph from the British poet Edward Bond offering the reminder that the Holocaust ought to make us see differently, this chapter turns to the topic “How should the Holocaust be studied?” An unpacking of that question reveals some important ethical implications embedded in and entailed by an interdisciplinary approach to Holocaust studies, an approach that is required if study of the Holocaust is itself to be ethically sound. As this chapter shows, those implications exist because of what happened to ethics during and even long before the Holocaust.
