Abstract

Developments in Russia in the area of ethnic-national education need to be discussed in the context of the breakdown of the old ideological system and the re-emergence of Russia in ‘pedagogical world culture’ (mirovala pedagogicheskaia kul’tura). The search for identity on the part of more than 120 ethnic groups that make up the Russian population does not fit easily with the aim of redefining inter-ethnic relations in a country that regards itself as a multinational state with a pluralistic conception of society. While ethnic Russians account for the overwhelming majority (now over 81 per cent of the population, compared with just over 50 per cent of the Soviet population), according to the preamble to the 1993 constitution, Russia is a ‘multinational body of people’ (mnogonatsional’nyi narod).
