Marquis of *Saluzzo and husband of *Grisilde in ClT. Walter is based on Valterius, the equivalent figure in *Petrarch’s version of the story. Initially, Walter appears as a worthy ruler, whose only fault is his lack of concern for the future. Once, however, he has been persuaded to marry in order to secure the succession, the focus of the tale shifts to his unconventional choice of a wife from a lowly background and, especially, to his relentless and disproportionate testing of her obedience.
