Abstract
The International Association of Waterworks in the River Rhine Catchment Area (IAWR) defined water protection requirements for surface water that is used for drinking water supply. These requirements changed with the legal standards for drinking water quality and the scientific findings in water research. They refer to the aim of waterworks that the water used for drinking water supply should meet a quality that allows the application of natural treatment only.
