Abstract

We study longitudinal merging of two bunches without phase space dilution by slowly switching to half the RF-frequency. By repeating this process, all particles accelerated in a heavy-ion-synchrotron are merged in a single bunch.

The problem is to determine the rate of change of RF-amplitudes, such that the merging of buckets is sufficiently adiabatic and the phase space dilution is minimized.

The use of a simulation program permits to take into account the effect of intro-bunch and bunch-bunch space charge forces.
