Abstract

The possible formation of carbene complexes of cytochromes P450 enzymes in various metabolisms of xenobiotics is first described. In view of these observations, the organometallic chemistry of iron porphyrins, serving as a basis for elucidating the mechanism of these enzymes is then presented, emphasizing the biological relevance. The chemistry of metalloporphyrin models has been extended to ruthenium and osmium complexes, both metals belonging to the iron triads. This review also illustrates that metalloporphyrins are versatile organometallic catalysts that can be used in many different reactions involving carbene transfer. Their development will be considerably widened in the future, with possible application in asymmetric catalysis.
