Abstract

U-Net provides user-level network access such that applications can send and receive messages without operating system intervention on every send and receive. The network is exposed to applications as a pair of transmit and receive buffer queues. Depending on the sophistication of the network interface hardware, these queues are serviced directly in hardware or via interrupt handlers and fast traps. A number of implementations of U-Net exist for Unix workstations connected to ATM and Fast Ethernet networks. This talk will present our experience in moving U-Net from Unix to Windows/NT and in allowing the operating system to demand-page network buffers.
