Tile Automaton for evolution of metabolism
A new model, “Tile Automaton” (“Tile” for short)is proposed for the evolution of metabolism, where the importance of dynamical many-body relationships and spatial effects of shapes are stressed. Like the computer game “Tetris”, our automaton consists of tiles with a variety of sizes, and shapes, moving in a 2-dimensional space with some velocity coded by a real number. By the collision, tiles react and change their shapes, according to the reaction rules given by the overlapped length by the collision. With this model, self-organization of ever-creating sets are obtained from a small number of simple-shaped tiles. Although a self-reproduction in the strict sense is not seen, we have found that a set of tiles is organized working as a unit of replication, self-maintenance and a source of novel patterns. The origin, maintenance, and evolution of complexity are discussed.
