Height fluctuations and pressure distribution in a model of random close packing of mono-size discs

Abstract

We study a variant of the model of random close packing of mono size discs in two dimensions studied by Meakin and Jullien. For this model we calculate the correlation function of the fluctuations of the height in the n-th layer, and show that the width varies as n 1/2 for large n. Assuming that the discs are frictionless we calculate the pressure distribution at the floor and show that the pressure distribution is uniform and is independent of the disorder.
