Abstract
Common transport protocols do not satisfy the requirements of upcoming applications (e.g. multimedia) and may not benefit from networks with new properties (e.g. ATM). The innovative transport system TIP provides an architecture which allows extendability and optimization of protocols to satisfy new requirements. A protocol is constructed from atomic protocol building blocks and may be tailored according to application requirements and network properties as provided by ATM. Since TIP basically uses a connection-oriented network service and QoS parameters, an efficient mapping onto ATM is possible.
