An analytical model for real-time multimedia disk scheduling
Traditionally, storage systems have been designed to provide good average performance without requiring explicit knowledge of the application requirements. However, with real-time multimedia applications, the knowledge of the requirements can be used by a storage system to schedule the real-time access of multiple streams. In this paper, we present an analytical model for a simple class of multimedia system, and examine classes of deterministic open-loop and closed-loop disk scheduling policies suggested by existing results from manufacturing system scheduling problems. The buffer requirements, system stability and convergence dynamics of these disk scheduling policies are presented, accompanied by numerical and simulation results.
