Abstract

Model calculations for dust formation in the ejecta of SN 1987A are presented. The outer layers of the ejecta are found to condense earlier, whereas the inner layers condense more effectively. The resulting mean degree of condensation is rather low (≈ 15%) and the dust particles remain extremely small (< 0.005 μm). Synthetic IR spectra are calculated and compared with the ESO infrared data set.
