Abstract

Radio continuum surveys of the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC and SMC), carried out over the last 8 years, have not only facilitated a comprehensive study of the thermal and nonthermal radio emission in these galaxies, but also provided linear polarization information about the two closest galactic neighbours. In particular, the magnetic field structure of the LMC could be disclosed. The large-scale structure of the LMC magnetic field resembles a trailing spiral. It is shown that the rotation measure and depolarization of a region ∽ 3 kpc in size which is located south-west of 30 Der can be modelled in terms of a giant magnetic loop bending out of the LMC plane towards the observer. This conspicuous region shows a well-aligned magnetic field structure, and appears to be associated with anomalous III components.
