Abstract

We have described two expert systems which have been developed in cooperation with the mining industry. They are implemented in Prolog and are running on PCs. In these projects we have been cooperating with engineers who are interested in solutions rather than programming techniques. Logic programming convincingly demonstrated its ability to solve complex problems which occur in a real industrial environment. A major point has been flexibility: supporting several phases of software production, starting with (rapid) prototyping and ending up with the final implementation of applicable systems. Another important point is that an expert system based on the logic programming paradigm fits well to — and can can even be regarded as a natural extension of — an information system which is based on a relational database management system.
