Abstract
We present a general solution to a common tactical problem, the contextsensitive suppression of redundant information. This solution is sensitive to unplanned, domain-specific inferences in the prior text. It employs a new, lexically grounded, conceptual representation for communicable information, which is part of a reversible model of how surface structures communicate information in naturally occurring reports.
The technique requires an extension to the kinds of syntactic knowledge we associate with relational lexical items and provides additional motivations for syntactic choices, and it assumes an architecture for text planning that keeps a careful, synchronized record of what information the surface structure communicates so that redundancy decisions can be made incrementally without explicit planning. The technique is most applicable in genres where texts communicate much of their information inferentially rather than literally.
