Particle acceleration in the impulsive phase of solar flares

Abstract

Theoretical ideas on particle acceleration in solar flares are discussed with emphasis on bulk energization of electrons during the impulsive phase. Many localized, short-lived episodes of energy release must be involved. An analogy with the acceleration of auroral electrons by multiple weak double layers (WLDs) is suggested and explored. Based on the auroral analogy a mechanism for reflecting electrons by solitary waves (SWs) in proposed. The prompt acceleration of relativistic electrons is discussed briefly.
