Abstract

We have presented some of the intellectual currents which provide the concepts, tools and techniques for building systems to support enterprise activities. I contend that the complexity of future intelligent information systems will require knowledge-based environments, tools and techniques for the specification, design, prototyping, implementation and evolution of such systems. The confluence of ideas from data, knowledge and information engineering will help in the construction of such environments.
