Abstract
Resonant recombination in atomic collisions is reviewed. This process, often referred to as resonant transfer excitation (RTE), occurs when electron capture (transfer) is accompanied by projectile excitation in a single-collision with the electron-electron interaction mediating the combined capture and excitation. The close relationship of RTE to dielectronic recombination (DR) can be exploited to provide significant tests of theoretical calculations of this latter fundamental ion-electron recombination process. An overview of resonant recombination results obtained to date along isoelectronic and isonuclear sequences is presented and compared with theory. Certain discrepancies with theory exist and explanations which have been advanced are noted. Apart from its connection with DR, the RTE process also demonstrates the importance of the electron-electron interaction in the dynamics of fast ion-atom collisions. In this regard, results are discussed showing the role of resonant recombination in ion channeling and in relativistic heavy ion-atom collisions.
