Abstract

This section considers interworking from various interrelated standpoints. In particular, there is a focus on interworking involving COBRA and Signalling System No. 7 (SS.7). Since the scope for application of interworking units is vast it is often difficult to make direct comparisons. However useful insights can be drawn from each and every case in terms of the analysis of techniques employed. Such techniques can be categorises in terms of the relationship to 1) semantic, 2) interaction and 3) information issues. The papers in this section address mainly the latter two of these. In general this represents the interworking of communications devices as opposed to applications. Whilst this simplifies somewhat the complexity of the interworking problem, it places the significant emphasis of the problem in the communication engineering sphere closely allied to protocol engineering.
