Feasibility Model Implementation and Evaluation of an HFC S-CDMA Broadband Return Channel Concept

Abstract

Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) networks are considered a promising “last mile” infrastructure for interactive broadband multimedia services. The efficient utilization of the available return channel frequency spectrum and the specific ingress noise situation require an access network technology optimized for this environment. As an evolution of the current TDMA (time division multiple access) solutions (e.g. [1]), this paper proposes the S-CDMA (synchronous code division multiple access) technique for a reliable flexible broadband return channel implementation. Due to its spectral efficiency, robustness to narrowband and impulse distortions and flexibility to provide different bitrate and Quality of Service (QoS) to individual subscribers, it is very well suited for interactive multimedia services.This paper will give a description of the proposed S-CDMA system concept. The implementation of a feasibility model will be described and first measurements will be presented to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of the basic system concept.
