Abstract

Symmetries or approximate symmetries play an essential role in physics. Symmetries are related to invariants of the system, i.e. conservation laws and integrals. Therefore a symmetry that holds leads to a substantial reduction of work in the dynamical description. The case of a broken symmetry is equally important. Reasons for a symmetry to be violated can be many-fold, e.g., new forces, new particles, properties/structure of the vacuum state, phase freedom, etc. In its turn the investigation of symmetries provide an excellent tool to find “new physics”.
