Abstract
Document structure is one of the important characteristics of a document, as are content and graphical characteristics. For instance, a document may be composed of a title and some sections where each section in its turn is composed of a title and paragraphs. Research in recent years shows that it is advantageous to be able to use the structure of a document in the representation of the documents in document bases (e.g. [BRG88, AFQ89, GZC89, KLMN90, MRT91, LZS95]), thereby creating structured documents. Further, international standards such as SGML (e.g. [Gol90]) and ODA (e.g. [IOS87]) have been developed requiring documents to be defined in terms of a structure of parts.
