Abstract
It is natural, in many situations related to physics or geometry, to study representations of the free group with values in SL(2,ℂ). Conjugate representations just differ by a change of coordinates, so one should be interested in quantities invariant by conjugacy; the trace is one such quantity, so that, for a representation ø, one is interested in studying tr ø(W), for an element W of the free group.
