7 Conclusion
In this paper we introduced an ontology-based, service-oriented framework for knowledge management in distributed virtual organizations. The key of the framework is a layered architecture combining the concepts of ontologies and services. To decouple knowledge publishers and knowledge consumers, the framework uses mediators and aggregators for the composition of services independent from the network architecture and the availability of individual services.
We demonstrated the use of the framework in two applications supporting the collaboration of mobile surgeons exchanging knowledge about patients and teams working at different locations on the distributed production of a large film.
