Summary
This chapter will review hinged knee designs, describe the correct indications for using them, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this type of implant especially in revision surgery. The new modular rotating-hinge prostheses provide better knee kinematics than older rigid-hinge devices and offer many modular options. Modular rotating hinges, however, are rarely indicated. They may be considered in salvage situations with massive bone loss and soft-tissue deficiencies which cannot be treated sufficiently by posterior-stabilized or condylar-constrained implants. To determine long-term success of these components, further follow-up studies are necessary.
