Abstract
The limulus amoebocyte lysate (LAL) test has been used to indicate the presence of endotoxin in plasma for many years [1]. Discordant results were explained by variations in preparation, lack of sensitivity but also specifity of the test assay [2].
In 1993 Di Padova et al. [3] were able to generate a broadly cross-reactive monoclonal antibody (Mab) Wn1-222/5 recognizing the core region of E.coli, Shigella and salmonella R-and S-form LPS. Since WN1-222/5 is capable of recognizing the immunogenic and antigenic epitope, it can be used in a therapeutical as well as in a diagnostic way.
